An unbalanced or incomplete wealth statement is the single biggest trigger for FBR Section 176 notices in Pakistan. Don’t file it yourself without understanding the rules.

WHAT IS A WEALTH STATEMENT?

Your Wealth Statement Is FBR's Window Into Everything You Own

A wealth statement (also called a statement of assets and liabilities) is a mandatory annual declaration filed with FBR as part of your income tax return. It lists everything you own and owe as of 30 June each year. FBR cross-checks it automatically against NADRA property records, motor vehicle data, bank information, and SECP company registrations. Any unexplained increase in wealth triggers a notice.

THE GOLDEN RULE OF WEALTH STATEMENTS

Assets (this year) = Assets (last year) + Declared Income − Declared Expenses

If your assets grew more than your declared income allows — FBR will ask where the money came from. This is called an unexplained wealth discrepancy and is the most common wealth statement problem FirsTax resolves.

WHAT MUST BE DECLARED IN YOUR WEALTH STATEMENT

Property

  • Residential plots & houses
  • Commercial property
  • Agricultural land
  • Property under construction

Vehicles

  • Cars & motorcycles
  • Trucks & commercial vehicles
  • Vehicle in family member’s name
  • Year of purchase & value

Financial Assets

  • Bank account balances (30 June)
  • Cash in hand
  • Savings certificates (NSS)
  • Prize bonds

Investments

  • Stocks & shares
  • Mutual funds
  • Business capital
  • Partnership shares

Foreign Assets

  • Property abroad
  • Foreign bank accounts
  • Foreign investments
  • Remittances sent/received

Liabilities

  • Bank loans
  • Personal loans
  • Credit card balances
  • Mortgage outstanding

THE 7 WEALTH STATEMENT MISTAKES THAT TRIGGER FBR NOTICES

Most First-Time Filers Make at Least 3 of These Mistakes

MISTAKE 1

Omitting inherited or gifted property

Property inherited from parents or received as a gift must be declared in the year it transferred to your name. FBR has the registry records — they know about it even if you don’t declare it.

MISTAKE 2

Not declaring vehicles in family members’ names

If you paid for a car registered in your spouse’s or parent’s name, it should be in your wealth statement under the beneficial ownership rule. EXCISE records are cross-checked by FBR.

MISTAKE 3

Understating cash in hand

Many filers declare PKR 5,000–10,000 cash in hand when they actually hold lakhs in cash. If bank deposits later don’t match, FBR questions the unexplained source of funds.

MISTAKE 4

Not reconciling with the previous year’s wealth statement

FBR’s system automatically compares this year’s wealth with last year. If your net assets grew by more than your declared income allows, the system flags it. Every rupee of asset growth must be explained.

MISTAKE 5

Using wrong property values

Property must be declared at the higher of purchase price or FBR DC value at the time of purchase. Using the wrong value creates inconsistencies FBR picks up when it cross-checks deed values.

MISTAKE 6

Not declaring foreign assets

Overseas Pakistanis and dual-nationals must declare foreign property, bank accounts, and investments. Pakistan’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS) commitments mean FBR increasingly has access to foreign financial data.

MISTAKE 7

Filing wealth statement separately from income return

The wealth statement is filed as part of your annual income tax return — not separately. Many people don’t realise the return is incomplete without a balanced wealth statement attached.

WEALTH STATEMENT FAQs

Everything About FBR Wealth Statements in Pakistan

A wealth statement is a mandatory annual declaration of all your assets and liabilities as of 30 June, filed as part of your FBR income tax return. Everyone who files an income tax return must include a wealth statement — salaried employees, business owners, freelancers, and property owners. It is not optional.
If your assets grew by more than your declared income allows — FBR’s system flags it as an ‘unexplained wealth discrepancy’ and issues a Section 176 notice demanding explanation. This is the most common notice FirsTax resolves for clients. We ensure your wealth statement is correctly balanced before filing so no notice follows.
Assets registered in your spouse’s name should be included if you funded them — under the ‘beneficial ownership’ principle. FBR checks NADRA property records and motor vehicle registrations and will flag assets purchased with your declared income that don’t appear in your wealth statement. FirsTax advises on what to include based on your specific situation.
Inherited property must be declared in your wealth statement in the year it transferred to your name. The inheritance itself is treated as a receipt (gift/inheritance) that explains the increase in your assets. The property value is declared at the DC value at the time of inheritance. FirsTax handles inherited property declarations correctly — it is one of the most commonly missed items.
Yes. You can file an amended income tax return with a corrected wealth statement. FirsTax handles amended returns for PKR 5,000. If you’ve already received an FBR notice because of an incorrect wealth statement, we handle both the notice reply and the corrected filing — PKR 7,000 combined.
The wealth statement is included in your annual return filing. Wealth statement services start from PKR 5,000. All fees are fixed and confirmed before work begins.
